PGR were engaged by a fabric manufacturer to carry out a review of their previous R&D claim which was completed by a Big 4 Accountancy Practice.
The previous claim in question included projects for new product development activities only. The Company also noted that delivery of this project had taken significant levels of 2 Directors time to both manage the process and capture the information.
The PGR project team selected for this project, included team members with relevant experience in the clients industry;
- A Qualified Manufacturing R&D Engineer; and
- A Chartered Accountant with a background in manufacturing and engineering
The project team carried out multiple site visits to meet with Company staff each of which were required to dedicate no more than an hour each. As the PGR project team spoke the language of the Company, this allowed for efficient and useful meetings guided by PGR.
This PGR approach resulted in additional qualifying projects being identified, which were not included in the original claim:
- 2 new product development projects, and
- 3 process development
As part of the process the PGR technical team wrote an extremely detailed technical report for HMRC, with 10 times more supporting technical information included than in the original claim report. The report went through multiple internal reviews including a “cold review” by a PGR Chartered Tax Advisor from HMRC’s perspective before submission
This technical report allowed HMRC to identify why the additional projects qualified per the legislation and fully explain the amendment to the prior claim. Resulting in the additional refund being received within 6 weeks of submission and no queries from HMRC.
